Whether on posters of travel agencies, in high street shop windows or in uni lectures: images of the foreign, the ‘Other’ – often depicting peoples and cultures from the Global South — are all around us. However, if you look closely enough, the borders between one’s ‘own’ and allegedly ‘different’ cultures, between ‚self‘ and ‚other‘ actually aren’t that clear. In fact they are blurred, hardly distinguishable. People emigrate, immigrate, integrate, and they always have. But they also isolate and segregate. Images, whether in the news or in our heads, define what is different, what is ‘Other’, and at the same time define the ‘Self’. Where are these images visible in Heidelberg? And what role do they play here today?
The photo competition “¿fremd_bilder?” is your chance to share your own perspective on this issue! Five judges from Heidelberg’s arts, academic, and political communities will select the best submissions to be part of an exhibition. Prizes of up to 150 € will be awarded to the three best images. The exhibition opening will take place in the breidenbach studios, where the three winners will be elected and we’ll showcase a selection of the best images. The exhibition itself provides a space to substitute a single image of what Heidelberg is, with the city’s multicoloured sides. What is part of Heidelberg but never gets shown? What are the cultures that belong to Heidelberg that are never portrayed?
Capture these dimensions in Heidelberg’s familiar and not so familiar surroundings. Anything goes! You can use up to half an A4 page to explain your picture.
